ClickUp was founded in 2017 with a simple thesis: its founders' marketing team was handling 15 different tools for 25 people. The product premise since then has been convergence: a single space that replaces task manager, documents, chat, calendar, goals, time tracking, forms and AI. Today it positions itself as 'the first Converged AI Workspace' and articulates its discourse around work sprawl: the hidden cost of having disconnected tools, people and processes.
The product was relaunched as ClickUp 4.0 in December 2025 with a complete redesign: Brain in the sidebar, proactive AI agents in chat, Enterprise Search via the acquisition of Qatalog, and SyncUps (native video calls with transcription and action items). The acquisition of Codegen that same year brought in its CEO Jay Hack as Head of AI at ClickUp and added a specific engineering agent capable of creating PRs and executing technical tasks within the workspace.
The AI layer is where it invests most. Super Agents are AI companions that appear as real users in the workspace, can be mentioned with @, assigned to tasks and configured with over 500 skills. The CEO himself operates with 2,000+ Super Agents in what he calls 'Founder Mode'. It supports multi-model (GPT-5, Claude Opus, o3, o1-mini) and MCP, which allows Claude or ChatGPT to connect directly to the workspace as external tools.
